Bones are tissues that continuously breaks and rebuild in tiny amounts. It is important to keep the bones healthy as these provide a frame to the body protect vital organs and helps one walk or run besides other activities.
Bones normally reach their peak mass by the age of 30. In case of men it comes at the age of 70 yrs .
This is mostly due to the fact that there are typically no symptoms in the early stages of bone loss. But once the bones have weakened by osteoporosis you may have signs and symptoms that include back pain, loss of height over time, developed a stooped posture and bone fractures that occur easily and frequently. To catch the disorder regular bone density check should be a must.
Low levels of sex hormones may also weaken bones.
Reduced estrogen levels in women at the time of menopause are one of the major risk factors for developing osteoporosis.  Men also experience in gradual reduction in testosterone levels as they age.
People affected with thyroid disorder are also at risk.
Too much of thyroid hormones can cause bone loss.
People with overactive thyroid or those on huge dose of thyroid hormone medication for an under active thyroid are also at risk.
Those who spend a lot of sitting have a higher risk of osteoporosis than  those with active lifestyles. Weight bearing exercise that promote balance and good posture are beneficial. However walking is beneficial than other exercise.
Daily consumption of  more than two alcoholic drinks increases the risk of osteoporosis.
Regular smokers have weak bones.
Most serious complications is bone fractures particularly of hip or spine fractures.
Sometimes fracture may occur without a fall especially spinal. The vertebrae of the spine can become weak and may crumple.
Osteoporosis fractures drastically cut the lifespan of a lot patients.
Many Indian studies have found that more than half of people having met fractures due to osteoporosis do not survive than an year.
The number of cases of osteoporosis are increasing so much  and is indicative of the fact that world is suffering from an osteoporosis epidemic.
